Time To Replace Your RV Mattress?
My wife and I have been spoiled. When we were full-timing in a couple of different large RVs, each was set up with a master bedroom — complete with a quality queen size bed and a nice firm RV mattress.
When you spend big money on a motorhome or fifth wheel designed for extended living, odds are the quality of the RV mattress will be pretty good.
Since we no longer live full time in an RV, we currently have a travel trailer that is on the lower end of the scale as far as RV amenities and style go. It’s quite functional, but the factory-supplied RV mattress is of very poor quality. For example: it’s seriously lacking adequate padding, it’s only a full size bed, and the corner on one side is lopped off to provide access to the bathroom.
If you have a less-than-adequate RV mattress, then you’re probably wondering if you’re stuck with the one that was provided from the factory or if you can get a higher quality replacement instead.

RV Mattress Sizes
First, you need to know what size of RV mattress will fit within your allotted space.
Here’s how to measure your RV mattress space:
- Width – measure from the inside of one side of the mattress to the inside of the other side where the mattress will rest.
- Length – measure from top to bottom where the mattress will rest.
- Height – measure from the resting area of the mattress to the highest point vertically you want the mattress to reach.
RV mattresses are usually shorter than standard household mattresses. And, when it comes time to buy sheets for your RV mattress, you’ll need to know which of these standard sheet sizes will fit your new mattress…
The most popular RV mattress sizes are:
- Queen Short: 60″x75″
- Three Quarter Size (also known as an antique size): 48″x75″
- Twin Size: 38″x75″
- RV King: 72″x80″
- Regular Queen: 60″x80″
- Full Size: 53″x75″
- Regular King: 76″x80″
If you’re replacing a mattress for the bunk in your RV, then you’ll need a truck mattress. The most common truck mattress sizes are:
- 42″x80″
- 38″x80″
- 32″x79″
- 36″x76″
- 35″x79″

Most RV mattresses are foam based because of the nature of the way that they need to be shipped. RV mattresses need to be compressed and rolled in order to avoid FedEx and UPS oversize charges. If they are shipped flat pack (not compressed and rolled), an LTL carrier has to be used for shipping ($$$$). In addition, a compressed and rolled mattress makes for easy installation in your RV or travel trailer.
