RV Roadtrip: Austin, Texas

austin-texas-skyline.jpg Austin, Texas is one of my favorite places.

We went there a couple years ago to attend a Hot Tuna concert at the University of Texas Austin campus. The venue was small, but we thoroughly enjoyed the 2 shows.

The list of fun things to do in Austin is practically endless. Here are some ideas...

Live Music In Austin, TX
The capital of Texas, Austin’s nickname is The Live Music Capitol Of The World.

There are hundreds of places to catch a band in live performances. Just take a walk around downtown any night of the week.

The Public Broadcasting Service tapes Austin City Limits in a KLRU television studio located on the University of Texas campus. The studio is located on the 8th floor.

threadgills-restaurant-austin-tx-2004.jpg You can call the KLRU Hotline at (512) 475-9077 to find out when tickets are distributed and who will be performing. If you’re lucky enough to grab the tickets, you’re sure to enjoy the show.

Janis Joplin got her start in Austin, Texas singing for beer at Threadgill’s Restaurant. They’ve been in business for more than 75 years, serving meatloaf, jumbo fried gulf shrimp and many other delicious dishes.  It is a must-go place to eat and see the museum while in Austin.

Fun On The Water In Austin, TX

Austin is not just music, though. Several lakes in the area offer places for boating, waterskiing, and fishing. Lady Bird Lake, formerly known as Town Lake, is a good place for canoeing and kayaking. No motorized boats or jet skis are allowed there.

At Lake Austin, you can take a guided boat tour at The Sunshine Machine. At Lake Travis, go parasailing, rent a boat, or hire a fishing guide for a day on the water fishing for largemouth bass, catfish or sunfish.

Scenic Trips & Tours Of Austin
One of the most original forms of entertainment Austin has to offer is entirely free. Many people gather to watch the bats at the Congress Avenue Bridge. Over a million bats have taken up residence under the bridge! They fly out at night, eating many pesky insects and mosquitos.

Take a ride on the Austin Steam Train, go on a Ghost Tour of the downtown area on a Friday or Saturday night, or take in the Austin Zoo.

One thing is for sure, you won’t have time to be bored in Austin!
