How Much Fuel Does An RV Generator Burn?

It seems like we learn something new about RVs on every trip, and this one was no different.

Do you know how much gas an RV generator uses when it’s turned on?…

I’ve always wondered this.

Because sometimes we are a little careless about leaving the generator running (…for example, so the RV will be cooler when we return if the air conditioning is left on).

So I did a little research and I found this:

The three most common fuel types of generators are diesel, LP or gasoline.

  • LP generators use approximately 1-1/2 gallons of propane each hour, in a coach that is utilizing 2 air conditioners.
  • Gasoline generators run on gasoline and the fuel supply is greater when the supply is drawn from the same tank as the main engine.
  • Diesel-operated generators burn the least amount of fuel, about .75 gallons under a 2 air conditioner load.

With proper operation, maintenance and care, LP and gasoline gensets may run for well over 1,000 hours before requiring a major overhaul. Diesel-fueled sets are likely to run even longer.”

Do you have to start engine after running generator for some many hours

    • Curtis

Casandra, The vehicle engine is completely separate from the generator system. You can run the generator as much as you want with the only concern being that it will stop running when the gas tank drops below 1/4 tank. A safety measure so you can’t use up all the gas and end up being stranded.

We smell some fumes in sd ide the rig that makes us cough and eyes burn the carbon monoxide detector went off once in we open up the vent fans and windows. Then after a while the smell came back but the detector did not go off could not sleep fumes burned my nose. What should I do? Too cold outside and we have no electricity in our house.

        • Curtis

Casandra, I can’t safely make recommendations without being there and seeing how your motorhome is set up. You may have an exhaust leak or prevailing winds are pushing the fumes back into the rig. If you smell fumes in the RV it’s time to turn the generator off and find a difference source of electricity.

Can I leave my generator on while we sleep

    • Curtis

Casandra, Yes, in most instances the generator is mounted with it’s exhaust extending beyond the side of the motorhome and toward the front of the motor home. I would recommend you keep the windows directly above the generator exhaust closed to prevent any fumes from coming into the motorhome. If the motorhome was built within the last 20 years or there about’s it has a carbon monoxide detector as a safety device to warn you.

Do the gas(lp) need to be on while generator is on to run heat from furance

    • Curtis

Casandra, Yes, the furnace fan uses electricity to blow the air but it uses propane to create the heat.

We smell some sort of fumes in our rig that burns your eyes and it hurts me to breath. The cabon dioxide detector went off only once and we open up all the windows and came back the smell was still there and the detector went off. The smell is still in the rig where should I start to check first.
